With the fall season may Coloradans will be enjoying pumpkin spices, whether in pumpkin pies, coffees, on oatmeal, etc. at home. Consumer Reports has a list of powders and spices we need to throw out.

The last thing you want, is to have enjoyed a delicious pie or drink, only to find yourself sick, down the line, due to consuming too much lead. Fall is the season for comfort food, lead is neither comforting or food.

If you have any of these particular powder or spices, just take them from your cupboard to the trash.

Coloradans Should Throw Out 12 Cinnamon Powders/Spices

In September of 2024, Consumer Reports issued a warning about high levels of lead in a dozen cinnamon powders and cinnamon spices.

Consumer Reports' Food Safety scientists tested three dozen brands, after there was an outbreak of lead poising from three brands of apple puree pouches and issues with ground cinnamon.

Having lead that's more than 1 part per million in the produce would have New York recalling the product (New York is currently the only state that would do that), because just a quarter teaspoon of that product would be more lead than you should have in an entire day.

I've always been a fan of McCormick spices; thankfully their ground cinnamon has only 0.23 ppm., they are among Consumer Reports' "OK to Use" list of 12. They also have a list of 12 "Best to Use."
