Often times, when a business in Colorado closes it goes without notice. This business, in Downtown Loveland that's closing, will leave many in dismay. Sure, it's a pawn shop, but it's stood the test of time and helped thousands.

Why is Friendly Pawn in Loveland Closing?

On July 1, 2026, just before the long 4th of July Weekend, Friendly Pawn announced on their Facebook page that they'd be closing their doors for good in the fall, on September 30th.

... To everyone who walked through our doors, trusted us with your valuables, shared your milestones, or simply stopped in to talk: thank you. You made this shop more than a business. You made it part of Loveland’s history.

Friendly Pawn started way back in 1975 as Family Pawn, according to the Reporter-Herald. Having grown up in Loveland with single mother, we used to need a pawn shop often. Family Pawn/Friendly Pawn were always just as stated: Friendly. They weren't like a stereotypical pawn shop: dirty, gruff, etc.

According to Friendly Pawn, the goal from the start, when Ray Steele Sr. opened up: "o help people when they need it most." That "helping people" helped the business to grow; in 1998, according to the Reporter-Herald, they opened a big location (and later expanded it) in Downtown at 2nd Street and North Lincoln.

What's Next for Where Friendly Pawn 'Used to Be?'

While it's sad to see a longtime business close it's doors, it does make one wonder what will become of that large space at 200 North Lincoln. I could see a developer buy up that whole 1/4 block (2nd north to 3rd) and turn it into another "retail on the bottom, apartments above" place that Downtown already has several of.

Maybe someone will just take over the former Friendly Pawn space and put in a restaurant; Downtown is always in need of "something new" when it comes to dining out.

MORE LOVELAND - The Last Day of the Downtown Safeway

When I paid my last visit to the Downtown Safeway on its last day, October 25, 2025, it was with trepidation: I didn't want to see how sad it probably looked, but like watching a wreck on the highway, it was hard to not see the how it looked.
