Shields Will Be Shut Down For 11 Frustrating Days In July – Here’s What We Know
With the fun that a Colorado summer can bring, it will invariably also bring road construction. Fort Collins drivers are going to see a major detour for nearly two weeks towards the end of July 2026.
What Part of Shields in Fort Collins Will Be Closed for 11 Days?
The City of Fort Collins put out a press release about utility work that needs to be done that will involved a full closure of Shields between Mountain Avenue and Mulberry Avenue. Though Colorado State University won't be back in full swing at the end of July, you have to imagine the thousands of commuters who'll be frustrated.

When Will the Closure of Shields be Taking Place?
The closure of Shields (to install protected bike lanes and more) will be from July 20-31; this will come after lane shifts that will be happening July 6 until July 19. Hot summer days mixed with closures/detours, does not add up to a fun drive through town. In the end it will be much safer for cyclists, so that's good.

What are the Planned Detour Routes For the Closure of Shields?
The City is planning on having drivers use Taft Hill to the west and College Avenue to the east to avoid the 11 day closure. This could be an opportunity for folks to check out things on College that they've been putting off; or, to the west, maybe to stop in at Stodgy Brewing for a tasty craft beer to ease your frustration.
