Fort Collins Police Services (FCPS) recovered over 100 marijuana plants and methamphetamine materials from a local home during a recent investigation.

According to a press release from the City of Fort Collins, the investigation began earlier this year after authorities became aware of possible illegal activity at a residence in the 2200 block of Ayrshire Drive. Officers later discovered marijuana plants, marijuana packaged for distribution, chemicals for producing meth and illegal narcotics within the home.

The home in question is a rental property, and police say the owner was unaware of the situation.

"Many people think that illegal marijuana cultivation poses little threat to the community. However, this case illustrates otherwise," said Marijuana Enforcement Officer Jim Lenderts in the release. "In addition to the property damage caused by large-scale grow operations, methamphetamine production creates significant risks. Add in illegal distribution and crimes associated with it, and this unobtrusive home was clearly a danger to our community."

Fort Collins residents are allowed to grow marijuana within their households, so long as the amount does not exceed six plants per person or 12 plants per household. More information about the City's regulations can be found here.

Illegal grow operations can also result in expensive home repair and hazard remediation costs. For this reason, FCPS recommends that landlords include clear marijuana protocols within their rental contracts.
