Walmart May Get Windsor Approval After Waiting Nearly 20 Years
Decision time has come for whether or not a Walmart Supercenter will be built in Windsor. The town is set to decide on Monday whether or not those plans will be allowed to proceed.
Walmart has owned the property at the northeast corner of Main and 17th street for nearly 20 years, believe it or not. They purchased the land when Windsor consisted of about 14,000 residents. Today, Windsor has more than 45,000 residents.
Town officials say that if allowed to proceed, construction could begin in as little as a few months.
A pop-up on the Town of Windsor's website reads:
"The Town Board is reviewing a major site plan for a large retail establishment on this topic on 7/13. The meeting is being held at the Town Hall, 301 Walnut St., at 7 p.m."
The reactions to the news have been mixed, while some residents see the need and value a store like Walmart could provide, making larger shopping trips more convenient than having to drive up to Harmony and I-25, or west into the City of Loveland, depending on where in Windsor you live and your store preference.
Back in 2004, the Town Board voted not to allow the development to proceed, declining to zone the property for commercial use.

But in 2005, a citizen led effort to get the issue on the ballot ultimately was passed in a special election to designate the property as zoned for commercial use. Last year, Walmart hit the "go" button as they submitted plans to the town, which has been discussing the issue ever since.
Monday's vote will possibly be the final green light needed before construction begins. Any interested citizens should plan to attend the meeting at Town Hall on Monday, July 13 at 7 PM.
