Incoming CSU Student Expelled Over Racist Snapchats

Colorado State University (CSU) made the decision to expel an incoming freshman after reviewing a series of racist Snapchats the student posted in June.

According to The Coloradoan, one Snapchat showed the student using a racial slur and calling for violence against black people, while another showed him using racial and homophobic slurs to rant about slavery.

Students brought the Snapchats to CSU's attention shortly after they were posted, and started a petition to ban the student from the university.

CSU released a statement about the incident on Wednesday (July 1), revealing that the student in question has been expelled.

"Due to the violent and threatening nature of the language used, this post moved beyond the protections of the First Amendment..." read the statement. "...the behavior violated the Student Conduct Code. As a result, the individual has been disciplinarily expelled from CSU."

On top of petitioning to have the student expelled, students are also calling for the defunding of the Colorado State University Police Department (CSUPD).

CSU President Joyce McConnell held a virtual town hall in response to these calls on Monday (June 29), stating that a task force will be created to analyze "campus, community and personal safety" in regards to CSUPD.
