Colorado Police Say Don't Use Two Types of License Plate Covers

One Colorado police department has gone to social media asking residents not to use two types of license plate covers. One of the two is illegal. The other is something of a personal matter.

Patrol officers in Parker, Colorado are seeing an increase in both types of plate covers. According to their Facebook post, the situation must stop.

On Tuesday, March 28, 2023, the Parker Police Department posted the following on Facebook:

Please don't use tinted plate covers to obscure your license plate numbers or a Kansas City Chiefs license plate frame. One's illegal, and the other's ugly. - Parker Police Department

Increased Sightings In Colorado

According to the post from the Parker Police Department, patrol officers are seeing an increase in the number of license plates obscured with a tinted plate cover. The post cites Colorado Revised Statute 42-3-202 (2):

Such a device includes, without limitation:

a cover that distorts angular visibility
alters the color of the plate
smoked
tinted
scratched
dirty so as to impair the legibility of the license plate

To be blunt, I've never really given this much thought. When getting plates, I simply head down to motor vehicles and pay the nice lady a fortune and she hands me two license plates. I then use the basic skills my dad taught me when I was four to attach the plates to my car. As it turns out, there are rules. Here's a closer look at Colorado Revised Statute 42-3-202 (2).

Except when authorized by this article 3 or the rule of the department, the rear license plate must be:

Horizontal at a height not less than twelve inches from the ground, measuring from the bottom of the plate;
In a place and position to be clearly visible
Maintained free from foreign materials and clearly legible
At the approximate center of the vehicle measured horizontally; and(E) Mounted on or within eighteen inches of the rear bumper

(III) Except when authorized by this article 3, the front license plate must be:

Displayed horizontally on the front of a motor vehicle in the location designated by the motor vehicle manufacturer;
Maintained free from foreign materials; and(C) Clearly legible
