It's completely fine to set out to reach a summit or other specific destination but not reach it. Before you begin, check the current time and set a time that you absolutely have to head back at. It's said, "The destination is optional, returning is mandatory."

This one may be harder than it sounds, but it always better to be over-prepared. If something happens to the trail while you're out there, is there a secondary way back? That sounds pretty scary, to me; how many hikes have I done, assuming the way I go will still be "doable" on my way back.

Getting out for a hike can be about "getting away from everyone," and that's fine. But if nobody knows you even were planning a hike, and something happens to you during the hike, it could be days before help finds you. Just text a friend/family member where you're headed and when you should be back. It's not a sign of weakness to have somebody ready to call for help on your behalf.
