When I was growing up, we didn't wear helmets for anything but football. But I should have. I had a couple concussions when I was a boy, and they may have been prevented were I wearing a helmet.

There I am with about 30 stitches over my right eye. Pretty typical of my very rough and tumble, active childhood

I can remember it like it was yesterday. I was riding my bike down the big hill at the end of my street when I realized that my best buddy and faithful dog Peanuts was running behind me. He'd appeared out of nowhere, because back then, we also let our dog roam the neighborhood at his behest (something else we don't do anymore, for the better, probably). I was so excited to see him I looked backward to holler encouragements to him and slammed right into a parked car. BAM!

The next thing I remember, a neighbor was carrying me up the hill to my house and I was on my way to the hospital. Minor concussion.

The other time I had a concussion  was also caused by a dog. I was fooling around with my friends bulldogs (there were 4 of them) and I ran away from one. To my great satisfaction, it followed me. And then ran under my feet and tripped me.

Come to think of it, it probably would have made sense to put me in a helmet for everything I did. I often wonder how many IQ points I lost to those head injuries. Have they prevented me from achieving glorious accomplishments? I think they have, so if you want your kid to grow up to be a supreme master of the universe, maybe they should sport a helmet.
