A Dacono police officer was involved in a very scary situation earlier this week while transporting a suspect to the Weld County Jail.

The officer, who has not been identified, arrested 20-year-old Michael Zamarron in Longmont and was en route to the jail just before 11 p.m. on Wednesday (December 16).

According to Denver 7, the officer had just turned north on 83rd Avenue from 10th Street in Greeley when Zamarron managed to slip one hand out of his handcuffs. Zamarron then proceeded to reach through the partially open window of the patrol car and attempted to grab the officer's holstered firearm. During this time, Zamarron also allegedly hit the officer multiple times in the head.

The officer pushed the brakes on the patrol car before Zamarron was able to get the gun completely out of the holster. This led to a struggle between the two and one round was fired from the gun, although it is unclear who pulled the trigger.

Greeley police were dispatched to assist the Dacono officer with the suspect. They placed Zamarron back in custody and he was arrested on further charges, including second-degree assault on a police officer, attempted escape and disarming a peace officer. He was then booked into the Weld County Jail.

The Dacono officer was taken to a local hospital for non life-threatening injuries. The officer was not shot during the altercation.

This is still an active investigation, and anyone with information about the case is asked to contact Greeley Det. Brian Hunziker at 970-351-5451.
