If you happen to live off I-25 near Colorado Highway 392 in Windsor, you may have gotten a "shelter in place" alert Sunday afternoon from Weld County about an active shooting near AmericInn on Westgate Drive. The alert read:

This is Weld 911 with an emergency message from Windsor PD. There is major police activity in the area of the American Inn on Hwy 392. You are advised to shelter in place and avoid the area. Thank you.

Just after 4:20 pm, Police responded to a disturbance at the hotel, with witnesses reporting that a man was armed. Firefighters also responded to a fire alarm at the hotel at the same time. When several officers from many different agencies responded to the call and attempted to make contact with the man, gunfire was exchanged.

In all, the video shown from the scene on social media counts more than 40 police vehicles on the scene at the time, from multiple agencies including Windsor Police.

Windsor Police put out a statement Sunday evening saying:

On Sunday, Jan. 7, 2024 at approximately 4:21pm, Weld County Regional Communications Center dispatched the Windsor Police Department to the AmercInn in Windsor, located at 7645 Westgate Dr., for a report of a disturbance at the hotel. Witnesses on scene reported the suspect was armed with a weapon. Windsor Severance Fire Rescue responded to the hotel for report of a fire alarm at the same location.

Officers on scene attempted contact with the suspect. Officers then exchanged gunfire with the suspect.

Several area law enforcement agencies responded, and the suspect was safely taken into custody. No injuries have been reported, and there is no threat to the public at this time.
