While Loveland is widely-known for its amount of sculptures, it also holds an annual art event that is one of Colorado's biggest fundraisers in the fight against domestic violence.

How Long Has 'Pastels on 5th' Been Happening in Loveland?

The gathering of artists to create murals along the sidewalks of 5th Street in Downtown Loveland, "Pastels on 5th" began in 2011. 2025 marked the 15th event that has grown bigger and bigger each year, raising around $50,000 each summer to benefit Alternatives to Violence.

Established in 1982, Alternatives to Violence provides shelter, advocacy, education and resources for people impacted by domestic violence, sexual assault and human trafficking.

"Pastels on 5th" really is a "win-win-win" as the organizers intended it to be: It's a great way for artists to get their skills noticed, it raises a lot of money for Alternatives to Violence (with the sponsoring of the murals along with the public "$1 per vote" system,) and it brings several thousand people into Downtown Loveland to shop and dine.

For 2025, 150 sidewalk squares were turned into chalk-art murals, ranging from scenes of/about Loveland, to animals, to murals about "healing the soul." I imagine the artists preparing for the event by doing a lot of stretching that week, to be ready to crouch down on the sidewalk for hours on end. In the end, however, all that crouching is worth it.
