Rocky Mountain National Park was closed from outside the Fall River Entrance (US Highway 34) to Deer Ridge Junction on (Wednesday) December 8, following an officer-involved shooting incident that was reported to have taken place near the area.

According to CBS4 News Denver, the shooting stemmed from a traffic stop that occurred on US 34 outside of the park's east entrance at approximately 10:15 a.m. Two suspects were inside the vehicle, that was allegedly involved in a pursuit earlier in the morning. The pursuit did not occur within park boundaries.

Two people were reported injured as a result of the gunfire. One of these injured individuals is a law enforcement officer, who Denver7 News has reported is a park ranger. The ranger was wearing a ballistic vest and did not suffer serious injuries. The ranger and suspect were transported to a local hospital to be treated.

The second, uninjured suspect was taken into custody.

The incident remains under investigation and it is not known when Rocky Mountain National Park will reopen. The FBI is assuming the lead role in this case, but the agencies involved in this investigation include Estes Park police officers, Larimer County Sheriff’s Office deputies, Colorado State Patrol troopers, and Colorado State Park officers.
