One legendary Colorado restaurant chain takes you back in time, just pulling into their parking lots. It's been a part of Colorado families' traditions for decades; a place that brings back the innocence of the '50s.

Gunther Toody's Colorado Diner

Those who have grown up in Colorado since the mid-'80s have probably had at least one meal at one of the Gunther Toody's you'll find in the state. My brother and I had an uncle who always made it a tradition to take us to Gunther Toody's when we visited him in Denver.

The first Gunther Toody's opened in 1986 in Colorado Springs. Just three years later they opened their second location.

Somedays, the world just seems so crazy, that stepping away from it all and into a Gunther Toody's can be just what you need. It was a great idea when they first started in 1986, and it's still a great idea nearly 40 years later.

As I write this article, I become more and more convinced that they need to bring a Gunther Toody's location to the Fort Collins area. Sure there is one in Thornton, but one in the Northern Colorado area would please a lot of people.

How Did Colorado's Gunther Toody's Get Its Name?

Back in the 1950s (the setting for all Gunther Toody's) there was a popular TV cop show, "Car 54, Where Are You?" One of the police officers was Gunther Toody. Did you know Popeye's chicken was named after Popeye Doyle from "The French Connection?"

Maybe it's the name, maybe it's the comfort food, maybe it's having a birthday party there; there are a lot of reasons to enjoy Gunther Toody's. Just saying the name can put a smile on your face.

At their former Denver location on Alameda, our uncle was known for loving and inhaling their big Country Fried Steak; the thing seemed so huge when we were kids.

Again, it's about tradition; you're probably not going to make memories at a "regular' diner like you will at a Gunther Toody's.
