It's time to gather up those hard-to-know-what-to-do-with cans of paint or light bulbs and dispose of them properly.  Fort Collins residents can safely dispose of household hazardous waste at the next free collection event this Saturday, September 12th from 9am-3pm at the City of Fort Collins Streets Facility, 625 Ninth Street.

The City of Fort Collins webpage lists these guidelines:

Residents can drop off non-leaking household chemicals. Commercial waste is not accepted.

Items accepted:

  • household batteries
  • paint and pesticides
  • CFL bulbs
  • cleaning and automotive products
  • personal care products, including hair products and lotions
  • mercury containing items such as thermostats, thermometers and button-shaped batteries.

Items not accepted include tires, e-waste, explosives, asbestos, bio-waste (needles, bandages) and pharmaceuticals. Visit fcgov.com/recyclingcenters for disposal options for non-accepted items.

The risk of fire, explosion and spills exists when transporting hazardous waste products, so please prepare items safely for transport, following these rules:

  • store items upright in boxes or tubs, not loose bags
  • keep similar items together (do not stack)
  • containers must be sealed and cannot leak
  • acids and oxidizers must be separated
  • keep items away from children and pets
