Will Fort Collins Embrace These Dutch-Inspired Roundabouts in the ‘Montava’ Area?

A new community development is getting off the ground in northeast Fort Collins, and they will be installing "new to us" intersections in two places. How do they work?

Roundabouts, roundabouts, roundabouts. If you want to get people fired up, start talking about roundabouts. "There are too many," "Nobody knows how to use them," are the most common "beefs" about them. These roundabouts will be about making things safer for bikes and pedestrians. Will it mean, "easier?"

First off, you have to give them credit, as "Montava" really looks like "Montana" when you first see it. It's clever. Also clever, these roundabouts that they're installing. The City of Fort Collins recently put in "bike advisory lanes' along East Pitkin, which have met to both accolades from some, and frustration from others; how will these roundabouts fare?

Above, you can see where bicyclists (along with pedestrians) would have the "right of way" as they traverse through the roundabout.

Montava will be putting on a "test/demonstration" of the intersection in a parking lot at Front Range Community College on Sunday, October 30, 2022, from 1 p.m. until 3 p.m.  Will two hours be enough to really get the feel on how these work?
