Different Kind of Supermarket Bringing First Location to Colorado
A new grocery store coming to Colorado is big news, as it seems we're always looking for "another one" in town. One town in Northern Colorado looks to be getting one that is a bit different than we're accustomed to.
WinCo Foods Planning Store for Firestone, Colorado
If there's one thing we all have in common, it's that we all get groceries. We may not get the same things, but we all do hit a grocery store on a regular basis. This new one coming to Firestone will please some, but keep others from shopping there.
Waremart changed their name to WinCo Foods in 1998, to distance themselves from places like Walmart and Kmart.
I'd not heard of WinCo Foods until BizWest reported in February of 2025, that WinCo Foods had bought property in Firestone, near Highway 119 and I-25.
I wonder how they choose where to go, and how Firestone was chosen as the place their first store in Colorado would go.

As of March 2025, there are 138 WinCo Foods in America in 10 states; the Firestone location will make 11 states. The company is based out of Boise, Idaho and started out in 1967; they were known as Waremart until 1998. The new name means "Winning Company."

What is WinCo Foods All About?
WinCo Foods is a "no frills" supermarket, nearly the complete opposite of the new, giant King Soopers that opened in Fort Collins in February of 2025.
- Low prices.
- Bulk Foods/Bins sections - Over 800 items are sold "by the pound/ounce."
- Open 24 hours.
- Employee-owned.
Two Big Things to Know About WinCo Foods
- You do your own bagging, all the time.
- They do not accept credit cards - Debit cards are OK.
Some people may not want to bag there own groceries, no matter how much they're saving, but a lot of people will be OK with it, I suspect.
