Colorado will be getting a new and different kind of grocery store, one that looks to compete with Costco stores.

Gordon Food Service Store to Open First Colorado Location

If you've grown tired of shopping at Safeway and King Soopers stores, you may want to get ready for these Gordons to open, though it's not clear as to when that might happen.

By all accounts at least one will be opening by the end of 2025.

The majority of Gordon Food Service Stores are east of the Mississippi, there are 11 in the Houston area.

It was mid-February of 2025 that I heard that Gordon Food Service Store had gotten permits for a $5 million project to bring a location to Colorado Springs. Further investigation found that this would be one of three in Colorado, where once there were none.

What is Gordon Food Service Store?

Gordon Food Service itself, was established in Grand Rapids, Michigan, back in 1897 as an egg and butter delivery service. Over 100 years later, and still family owned, Gordon Food Service supplies restaurants and other establishments across the nation the goods they need.

With all that food and "household" items, Gordon Food Service began opening up "stores" to the public in 1979. Today, there are over 175 Gordon Food Service Stores (or Gordon Restaurant Markets) mostly east of the Mississippi River.

Where Will Gordon Food Service Stores Be in Colorado?

As far as my research found in February of 2025, they're planning one in Colorado Springs, one in Thornton and one in Fort Collins.

They're noted for taking over closed "big box" stores like Kmart (Thornton) and Bed Bath and Beyond (Fort Collins.)
