That huge dirt pile along I-25 between Highway 402 and Johnson's Corner even has a name. CDOT calls it Mt. 402. Communications Manager, Jared Fiel, told me it is not even dirt.

It is crushed rock that was blasted from the US 34 Canyon project which we are now using for road base for I-25 for the whole stretch from 402 to 14. There is 320,000 cubic yards or 200,000 tons of it.

According to CDOT, Crews have started construction to rebuild the Colorado Highway 402 and I-25 interchange. This is part of the I-25 North Express Lanes: Johnstown to Fort Collins Project. The work will be done into three phases.

Johnstown to Fort Collins Project - Three Phases of Work

  • Phase One: Building temporary infrastructure on the southbound side of I-25.
  • Phase Two: Pushing northbound traffic onto the southbound side to provide access to build infrastructure on the northbound side.
  • Phase Three: Switching northbound and southbound traffic onto the northbound side to allow crews to build the required infrastructure on the southbound side.
