Watch Soap Bubble Immediately Freeze In Cold Colorado Air
The weather around here has obviously been absolutely brutal cold the last handful of days. Sure, we could stay inside and pout about how it's too cold to go out and do anything, OR in the case of one social media user named Meagan Schrecengost, you could get out there and do some science!
A video has been making the rounds of news outlets and social media showing the Berthoud resident blowing soapy bubbles with a straw in her backyard on Monday, January 20. The video is shown in real time, and the bubble instantly begins to crystallize as it immediately freezes in the freezing temperatures. We started the day well below zero and didn't get above single digits for the day.
Soapy bubbles are just one of many different fun, little experiments like this you can do when the weather drops to these low temps.
Of course, we've all seen the one where people toss a pan of water into the frozen air and watch it evaporate before your eyes, but there are a few other things you can do that are fun for adults and kids alike.
For example, did you know that you make instant ice from water? If you super cool water in your freezer to JUST below its freezing point, like in a bottle of water, then take it outside and tap it gently or pour it over some existing ice. The water should freeze rapidly right before your eyes!
You can also grow your own ice crystals with a simple string placed in some cold water, then up and out either tied to something or simply over the edge of the container you put it in. Once the water in the container freezes, crystals will begin growing up the string and out of the water.
If it's going to be so cold you don't want to get outside and do much, at least there's a few fun "cold" things you can do and get right back in to warm up!
