It's been in the news for a while now, and we are no different here in the State of Colorado. To be fair, we are a BIT different along the lines of the rule, but not different in the sense people talk about it here too.

As 9News in Denver reports, there are a lot of moving parts surrounding proposed legislation aimed to change what ID and additional paperwork would be needed to vote in our elections.

But for now the question is: with this year being a federal election year, do you need a photo ID to vote in the State of Colorado? The factual answer here is NO. You do need ID, but it doesn't have to be a photo ID.

Only 12 states plus Washington DC do not require some form of ID already to vote: California, Illinois, Maine, Maryland, Massachusetts, Minnesota, Nevada, New Jersey, New Mexico, New York, Pennsylvania, and Vermont.

In 22 states, you do simply need to have a photo ID: Alabama, Arkansas, Florida (which also requires a signature on the ID), Georgia, Idaho, Indiana, Iowa, Kansas, Kentucky, Louisiana, Mississippi, Missouri, Nebraska, New Hampshire, North Carolina, Ohio, Oklahoma, Rhode Island, South Carolina, South Dakota, Tennessee and Wisconsin.

Idaho, Louisiana, Michigan, Texas and South Dakota have a few other things you can do if you forget or lost your license, like signing an affadavit.

Here in Colorado? Yes you need an ID. No, it doesn't need to have your picture on it.

That includes the obvious things like a drivers license or a passport, but according to the Colorado Secretary of State's office, also could include:

  • A copy of a current (within the last 60 days) utility bill, bank statement, government check, paycheck, or other government document that shows the name and address of the elector.
  • A Certificate of Degree of Indian or Alaskan Native Blood.
  • A valid Medicare or Medicaid card issued by the Centers for Medicare and Medicaid Services.
  • A certified copy of a U.S. birth certificate for the elector.
  • Certified documentation of naturalization.
