Do You Remember The Last Time A Pope Visited Colorado?
If you're trying to think of the last time a reigning pope visited the state of Colorado, unless you're over a certain age, you might not actually remember it ever happening.
That's because sitting popes have only visited the United States as a whole 10 times, and of those, only one time did any of them ever come to the State of Colorado.
The first ever papal visit to the U.S. came in 1965, when Pope Paul VI visited New York City.
Pope John Paul II tops the list of U.S. visits, by far, with seven total during his tenure between 1978 and 2005.
Pope Benedict XVI came here only once in 2008, visiting Washington D.C. and New York.

And the recently deceased Pope Francis came here in 2015, making stops in D.C., New York City and Philadelphia before returning to the Vatican.
So clearly, the only reigning pope to visit the state of Colorado was John Paul II. And it was major news for the state at the time.
He came here from August 10-15 in 1993 for World Youth Day, a massive event to celebrate young Catholics. More than 800,000 people attended the event at Cherry Creek State Park, after he had made a handful of other impromptu stops across the state, including a visit to St. Malo Retreat near Estes Park.
