New Poll: 3 In 4 Colorado Drivers Admit To Doing It While Driving
Before we get too far into this story, I'll address the elephant in the room. Not, not that "it" while driving. I'm talking about the other elephant in the room... that still 3 out of 4 Colorado adult drivers admit to using their phone while driving.
Governor Polis signed a bill into law in June that will take effect in 2025, which will make it illegal for any driver to use their phone in any way while driving, unless connected to a hands free device.
That will come as a needed change, given the 2024 Driver Behavior Report was just released by CDOT highlighting that 77% of respondents admit to still using their phone while driving one way or another, from talking to texting, to using apps and more. The good news here though is that 45% of those who do use their phones say that switching to hands free mode can and will stop them from using their phones behind the wheel in the future.
As Carplay and Android Auto become more standard on newer vehicles, and more app developers make their applications compatible with vehicles, the number of people fumbling with their phones is likely to decrease in coming years.
This year alone, while still 3 out of 4 admit to using their phones behind the wheel, the wurvey does show a decrease in risky driving behavior overall, and an 8% decrease in fatality crashes year over year.
