More news is coming out of Fort Collins regarding the upcoming MAX bus system, set to open this Spring.

On the corner of West Mulberry and Mason streets, a new apartment complex called Max Flats is under construction.  These new residences are being built to integrate seamlessly with the neighboring MAX transit center, according to the Coloradoan.

It's called a "transit-oriented development," and it's a bit part of Fort Collins' long -term growth plan.

When Fort Collins’ transportation master plan is fully implemented, the city’s goal is to have residents living within a 5-minute walk of mass transit. That means areas around the dozen transit stops along Mason Corridor are expected to grow up or redevelop with more people and more retail, restaurants and services.

I just wanted to share this because I think it's an awesome idea.  Why not have housing and businesses built up along public transit lines?  I sure wouldn't mind taking a brand new, state-of-the-art bus from point A to point B once in awhile.  No traffic, no parking, and fewer emissions in the air?  Sounds good to me.

Of course, driving one's own car does allow for more flexibility.  Hmm...

What do you think of "transit-oriented development?"  Let me know in the comments!
