Loveland to Determine If Tobacco Flavor Ban Goes on Ballot

Flavored tobacco products might not be available in Loveland for long.

According to a press release from the City of Loveland, the City Council will decide whether or not a tobacco flavor ban will appear on this year's regular election ballot during Tuesday's (April 27) meeting.

If passed, residents would get to vote on Ordinance No. 6457, which aims to ban the sale of "any tobacco product that imparts a taste or smell other than tobacco" — even flavors like menthol or mint.

"Vaping poses significant health risks to youth including disruption of brain development, addiction, and a strong link to using other tobacco products," reads the Council agenda. "Youth overwhelmingly reported vaping with flavored products, with 70% reporting use of these products because they are flavored."

The City Council previously cracked down on tobacco usage last week, voting to place location, age-limit, licensing and advertising restrictions on Loveland Tobacco Retailers. Retailers, including convenience stores, liquor stores, smoke shops and more, must complete their licensing by July 1.

Each commenter will have three minutes to speak. Council will read the ordinance again on May 4.
