From former forts and abandoned mines to century-old log cabins and ancient cliff dwellings, pieces of Colorado's historical past still exist around the state. Sometimes these sites are prominent and easy to spot. Other times, you have to search a little deeper to find them.

For example, a significant point of interest with a unique history sits up high at 8,016 feet in Routt National Forest -  out of sight except for those willing to hike a mountain to reach it.
