Howloween Happens Wednesday at 8 p.m.
It has quickly become a tradition to run outside and howl every night at 8 p.m. since the COVID-19 pandemic started.
But the tradition's purpose has become twofold: For one, it makes you feel connected to your neighbors, with everyone doing something at the same time. But the 8 o'clock howl also works as a way for us to collectively celebrate the people keeping us going and share our fear for the ones we fear to lose. Some howl to honor healthcare professionals and first responders, while others may be howling to honor someone who has contracted the virus.
April 22 marks the new moon and the Facebook group, Go Outside and Howl at 8pm, has created an event for all of us that partake in the howling to participate in. All you have to do is dress up in costume on Wednesday and howl your heart out. The description for Howloween reads:
"April 22nd, the New Moon, is Howloween! Get out your costumes, cover your tulips in fake spiderwebs and prepare to Howl at 8pm in your time zone!
Bring forth the goblins, the demons, the angels, the furries, the freaks, the believers, the conspirators, the lone wolves, the howlin' hunnies, the makers, The Mamas and The Papas, the dreamers, and weirdos of all kinds! Maybe even a few people from Colorado will turn up! Invite your friends!"
It's time for me to head to the basement and dig through storage to find a mask to wear.
