Devil’s Head Recreation Area Closes Due to COVID-19

Despite the fact that many Coloradoans have been enjoying some outdoor time amidst the COVID-19 pandemic, officials decided to close Devil's Head Recreation Area in order to protect the public from the virus.

According to The Denver Channel, forestry heads implemented the closure order on Tuesday (May 6), and it applys to all campgrounds, trailheads, the picnic area and fire lookout tower in Devil's Head, as well the Zinn trail and some Forest Service Roads.

Anyone who violates the order is subject to a fine of up to $5,000, a six-month jail sentence, or both.

Organizations that violate the order could face a fine of up to $10,000.

Diana Trujillo, the Forest Supervisor for the U.S. Forest Service (USFS), told The Denver Channel that she hopes the order will "limit gatherings of large numbers [and] promote social distancing."

She noted that social distancing is not possible at Devil's Head because of its fairly confined trails and lookout tower.

The closure will be in place until December of this year, unless it is rescinded beforehand.

Until that happens, only forestry officials will be allowed in Devil's Head.
