Despite a very bold statement from the University of New Mexico's freshman quarterback, Colorado State Football had a decisive win in Albuquerque on Saturday night.

A win that should, quite honestly, have Ram fans straightening in their seats.

Now, New Mexico wasn't slated to be the toughest competition the Rams have faced, or will face, this season. After the Lobos' haunting loss to San Diego State the week prior, the scoreboard looked almost the same when they hosted Colorado State.

Even with New Mexico coming into the game against the Rams with an 0-2 start to conference play against the Rams' current undefeated conference slate, the win should still have Ram fans straightening in their seats with confidence for the first time in the last few seasons.

What made this game so different from the ones before?

They learned consistency. The Rams built off of their success from last week against San Jose State and the CSU defensive line kept up.

Take away some of the penalties on CSU's end, the game against the Lobos probably should have been a shutout. Nevertheless, the stats speak for themselves. Looking at just one facet of the game, in passing yards alone, CSU dominated with 289 yards from Todd Centeio, completely blowing out the measly 16 yards allowed from two New Mexico quarterbacks.

As if last week's two school record-breaking performances for the Rams wasn't enough, Colorado State's defense allowed an average of just 1.4 yards per play, setting yet another school record.

In CSU's first two conference games, we are seeing the defense that was the benchmark for team performance during training camp. The defense that was previewed last year and promised this year is finally showing up.

After seasons of watching, frustrated with the inability of the Rams to tackle, watching the defense get simply outran and overpowered in the first game of the season against South Dakota State, it's almost strange to sit and feel confident in either side of the ball's ability.

But, yet again, Ram fans can sit the way they did against San Jose State last week. For the first time in a while, CSU fans can have confidence in their kicker, confidence in their defense, and confidence in the offensive line to give Todd Centeio the extra second he's needed to show what's been promised of him.
