Scalpers are reportedly taking advantage of limited appointment times for Colorado's new driver's license program for immigrants lacking legal immigration status, according to the state attorney general.

Colorado Attorney General Cynthia Coffman says scalpers were taking up free appointments through the Department of Motor Vehicle's online reservation system and illegally selling them for profit.

"Our office received information from the DMV that a number of people were hoarding appointment times and then selling those appointments at prices that range from $50 to as high as $1,000," Coffman said in a press release.

While the DMV's online reservation system does not allow appointments to be transferred to another person's name, 9NEWS found in a quick test that it was easy for a live person to rebook an appointment time under another name.

Coffman encourages immigrants applying for licenses to book a free appointment online, though as of Thursday morning, 9NEWS found that no appointment times were available through the DMV website, and only 3 DMV offices in the state accept appointments.

Immigrants without legal status in the country can also call the DMV for an appointment at 303-205-2335.

The attorney general asks victims who paid for appointment times to file a formal complaint online at stopfraudcolorado.gov or by calling in a tip to the office's consumer line at 1-800-222-4444.
