The Weld County Sheriff's Office is warning the public of at least two men who are posing as police officers and attempting to scam residents.

On Saturday, June 27, deputies received a report from a Weld County resident who said that his daughter had gotten a phone call from a man claiming to be "Deputy Walker" with the WCSO, and cited badge #1362. According to the report, the impersonator told the woman that she had an active warrant for her arrest, but offered to cancel it if she paid him $600 in gift cards. The caller further insisted that they stay on the line together while she went out to make the purchase, claiming that it would have to be approved by "Sgt. Hanes" in the finance department.

Not only was the woman's father concerned about his daughter's safety, but he was also a former law enforcement officer, and recognized the call as a scam.

The Weld County Sheriff's office does not have its own finance department to process warrants, and would also never accept gift cards as a means of cancelling out a warrant. Another sign that these men are scammers is that the actual Weld County Sheriff's badge numbers don't go into the thousands.

Anyone with information about these impersonators is asked to call the Weld County Sheriff's Office at 970-356-4015 or Northern Colorado Crime Stoppers at 1-800-222-TIPS (8477). Tips can also be submitted online at www.crimeshurt.com.
