Living in Colorado means dealing with all sorts of natural disasters. A recent study showed that between 1953 and 2019, Colorado saw 83 major disasters, most of which were floods and wildfires.

Northern Colorado has definitely seen its share of floods: The Big Thompson Flood of 1976, the Spring Creek Flood of 1997, and the "1,000-year floods" of 2013, stand out especially.

The possibility of death, and major destruction come with floods, along with fear; if we as Coloradans are better prepared in the event of a flood, our fears will ease.

When is Flood Season in Colorado?

With snowpack melting along with the natural showers and storms that come along, spring and summer bring the biggest chance for flooding in Colorado.

When a storm-system lingers for a few days, comes an increased risk, like we saw with the Big Thompson Flood, the Spring Creek Flood and the Colorado Floods of 2013.

I remember when the Big Thompson Flood in 1976 happened; I was young. It was unnerving, living in Loveland, to think of all the death and destruction that had happened up the Big Thompson Canyon and in Estes Park.

The Spring Creek Flood took many, many people by surprise. I, myself, had been playing disc golf at Edora Park in Fort Collins earlier that day, through the light rain that was falling. By the next morning, we'd all find out about the deaths and destruction that had happened with the overnight hours.

The City of Loveland published a list of five things Lovelanders can do to prepare for flood season, but the list applies the entire state.
