Johnstown, Colorado Celebrates One Year of Buc-ee's Being Open
It was almost pandemonium when It was announced that Johnstown would be the home of the very first Buc-ee's to hit Colorado. Fans from across the region rejoiced, people that had never heard of them, (like myself) got excited.
Buc-ee's began in 1982, with a 23-year-old Arch "Beaver" Aplin III opening a 3,000 square foot store. By 2025, there were 50 stores in nine state
Johnstown's Buc-ee's is 74,00 square-feet of food, beverages, knick-knacks, gifts and more. It's a very, very large convenience store, with an almost cult following. People love gong to Buc-ee's; whether for the jerky, the brisket, the coffee, the people watching.

You hear good things about Colorado's first Buc-ee's, whether from the customers or the nearly 300 staffers they have. That's good, they've been around since 1982, so they have a pretty good handler on things, these days, when it comes to new stores.

Denver 7 did an interview with Johnstown's Mayor about his town's Buc-ee's after having the doors open (24/7) for a full year. I took away four things that I found of interest.
More Than Half of Customers Drive More Than 50 Miles
Johnstown's Mayor said that 55% of customers drive 51 miles or more to get to the town's Buc-ee's. It does make sense, the store is much more than a convenience store, it's a destination.
More Than 80,000 People Got to Buc-ee's Every Month
If you think Buc-ee's is crazy-busy, it looks like you are correct. 80,000 every month seems astronomical; how about over 800 every hour? That's what Johnstown's Mayor says the store is seeing.
The Busiest Time of Day at Buc-ee's is Early Afternoon
If you're looking for a time when there will be less crowds, Johnstown's Mayor says you should avoid going at 1:00 p.m. Stop in early, show up later, but avoid the lunchtime, I would say.
Colorado's First Buc-ee's is Bringing in Huge Tax Dollars to the Town
Johnstown has definitely made some good decisions when it comes to business development. Downtown Johnstown remains pretty quiet, but the outskirts of town (along Highway 34, the I-25/Highway 60 area) are hopping.
After one year, Buc-ee's has brought in over $1 million in tax revenue to Johnstown, according to its Mayor.
Colorado's first Buc-ee's is a win - for customers, and for Johnstown.
