Woman and Dog Ejected From Ford Bronco Rolling On Black Bear Pass

A woman from out of state is in serious condition after rolling a 2021 Ford Bronco on the popular, yet treacherous Black Bear Pass Trail near Telluride Sunday morning. The occupants of the 2021 Ford Bronco included two women and a one-year-old Golden Doodle dog according to the San Miguel County Sheriff's Office.

The women drove up Bridal Veil Road, entering Black Bear Pass going in the wrong direction. The women decided to turn around after a couple of switchbacks on the trail. At this time, the passenger got out to assist in the navigation of the driver. While backing up, two of the Ford Bronco's wheels went off the edge, causing the vehicle to roll off the cliff which is estimated to be around 400 feet.

When the vehicle rolled off of the cliff, the driver, dog, and the engine of the Ford Bronco were ejected from the vehicle before coming to a complete stop. The driver was treated on the scene of the accident by Telluride Fire Protection District medics and was then transported to Telluride Regional Medical Center. San Miguel County Sheriff states that the one-year-old Golden Doodle named Chewy was treated for minor injuries and is doing well.

No other hikers or drivers that were in the area were injured or killed from the falling Ford Bronco or the flying debris according to the San Miguel County Sheriff.

"Black Bear Pass is an extremely dangerous road and should only be driven by experienced off-road drivers with appropriate off-road vehicles. Legally, a 16-year-old who got his driver's license a few hours prior may attempt to drive the pass in his grandmother's 1980's sedan. That doesn't mean it's safe to do so." was stressed in the Facebook post from the San Miguel County Sheriff.
