What is Champagne Powder®?
Champagne Powder® is totally unique to Ski Town, USA. It's formed by conditions that only join forces in Routt County, CO. I spoke with Loryn Kasten about the special snow that hits Steamboat Springs every year.
Because of the way our mountains are set up, the way storms roll into the area, and then bounce against the mountain, they get stripped of a lot of the moisture that most ski resorts see in their snow. So we have really light, really fluffy, dry snow.
For myself and thousands of others, Feb. 20, 21, and 22, 2012 at Steamboat Ski Resort in Northern Colorado were some of the best days of our lives.
We are people who love to play...no, we LIVE to play. It is an integral part of our lives, and we'll never let it go. And these days were a gift from Heaven. Twenty-seven inches of snow overnight. Then nine more the next night. Then twelve more on top of that. Go wherever you want. The mountain is totally open. If you fall, you will be met by a surface softer than your bed. This is almost consequence free frolicking.
On the chairlift, we talked about how work doesn't matter. We recalled other big snow days and marveled at how this one outdid them all. We guffawed.
By 3pm, our bodies ached, but we couldn't go in, because you never know when it is going to be this good again. It's what skiers and snowboarders dream of. Literally.
I am so thankful and grateful for lots of fresh, light snow.
