Wait… Colorado Waffle Houses Are Adding An Egg Surcharge?
Not sure if this is an egg-cellent idea or if things are really just getting this bad with the price of eggs, but Waffle House has announced that they're adding a surcharge to every egg sold across its 2,100 restaurants nationally.
Believe it or not, for each egg they cook for you, they will be adding a $0.50 surcharge to your bill. Three egg omelette? That'll be a buck-fifty more than usual.
Waffle House is quick to point out that the surcharge is temporary as egg prices have soared over the last several months due to many factors, not the least of which is the bird flu issue. But even though it's temporary, it will also be adjusted not only down - but also up if needed - depending on the severity of the eggs-istential crisis we're currently facing.
Waffle House serves roughly 272 million eggs per year across all their restaurants, so if you do the math on that, if the surcharge lasts all year they stand to bring in more than $130 million in added revenue thanks to the extra fee. Kinda makes you think about the cost of eating out versus eating at home a bit, doesn't it?
Not for nothing, 9News in Denver went on an egg-venture the other day to find out exactly how much different stores across the state are currently charging for a dozen eggs and the results - at least to me - were pretty surprising.
King Soopers tallied the highest price at $8.49 for a dozen, with $7.49 at a Safeway store and $7.42 at Walmart. The lowest? Bit of a shocker as Trader Joe's rings up a dozen at a cost-effective $3.49.
Someone needs to create an "Egg Buddy" app - like Gas Buddy - that tracks inventory and egg prices around town. THAT is an egg-cellent idea.
