How Many Colorado Park & Rec Departments Are Using a ‘Turf Tank?’
With all the outdoor sporting activities around Northern Colorado, the idea of a robot making thing easier seems like a great idea. Berthoud and Fort Collins are known to have a "Turf Tank;" cutting the amount of people and time needed to make a field look nice.
How Long Have Turf Tanks Been Around?
Turf Tanks began being sold in 2017, after being developed by American Jason Aldridge and partners in Denmark. Aldridge came up with this idea: to somehow automate the labor-intensive process of painting sports field. It's not a horrible idea, using less workers, for lesser amount of time and it looks good.

It's hard to track down exactly how many places in the state use Turf Tank, but Westminster, Lakewood and Parker are just a few cities. I only heard about Turf Tanks when I noticed, in late 2025, that the City of Berthoud had one.
Berthoud, like many cities/towns gave theirs a cute little name: "Patty the Painter." I've seen names like "George," "Sergei," and "Tank Williams Jr."
How Does Turf Tank Work?
Turf Tanks use GPS technology and an app; you plug in whichever template you want to use, fill up the tank with some white paint, and off it goes. Instead of city personnel having to map it out by hand, measuring, then snapping the line (which would take up to a week,) Turf Tank can get down in about two hours.
