Tokyo 2020: Colorado State Athletes’ Performances in the Games

Colorado had no shortage of representation in the Tokyo 2020 Olympic games, but seeing one current and four former Rams compete on the biggest athletics stage in the world was nothing short of pride-inducing.

Even though no medals came home with CSU athletes, coming back with the title "Olympian" is no small feat. Here's how the five Rams did this summer in Tokyo.

Shadae Lawrence

Lawrence placed third in the Group A discus qualifying event with a 62.27 meter throw. In the final event, Lawrence came in seventh with a 62.12 meter throw. Her throw landed 3.6 meters back from the bronze medalist's position.

Kim and Hanne Mestdagh

The Mestdagh sisters were a part of a historic Olympics debut and run for the Belgian Cats, Belgium's national team. After going undefeated through the first part of the pool phase, they were handed their first loss by China in the last game of group play.

In a tough game against Japan, the Cats lost by one, 86-85, in the quarterfinal match-up. Nonetheless, it was an incredible performance for a first-time Olympics, and the Cats have vowed to come back better than ever.

Mostafa Hassan

After narrowly missing out on the 2016 Olympics in Rio, Hassan came back with the big dreams he always had of competing in the Olympics.

In his qualifying event for men's shot put, Hassan threw his season best to place third in his group with a 21.23 meter throw. Not a bad time to throw a season best.

However, in the final event, Hassan placed eighth with a 20.73 meter heave. This put him 1.74 meters behind the bronze. Even with his finish, Hassan had the best finish in Egypt's history in the event.

Lauren Gale

The only current CSU athlete to compete in the Olympics, who has her senior season coming up this year mind you, competed for Team Canada as an alternate. While Gale didn't run in the qualifying heat or the final race, she still gets to come back as an Olympian with one more collegiate season under her belt.

Team Canada placed fifth in qualifying with a season best relay time of 3:24.05. They topped that time with another season best run of 3:21.84 in the final, putting them 60-100ths of a second behind the bronze medal.

The Olympics concluded Sunday Aug. 8 with Team USA leading the final total medals count with 113 and leading the individual count for all three medals.
