Northern Colorado is a great place for bird watching. From bald eagles to wild turkeys and adorable Great Horned owls, these unique species and more can all be found throughout our region.

Some of these birds are definitely harder to come by than others, but if you keep your eyes peeled, you never know what types you will see flying in the sky or perched in a tree.

A Great Blue Heron rookery in Fort Collins, for instance, is quite the spectacle to see, yet tons of people have probably passed by this tree and never noticed the nesting aquatic waders. According to a resident, this specific tree that's located on the west side of I-25 just south of the Harmony Road exit has served as a blue heron rookery for several years now.

As of early April, there were multiple new babies in the rookery as well, making this sight even more awesome to those who happen to see it while passing by.

Great blue herons can be identified by their long legs and neck, and the wide black stripe over their eye. As their name suggests, these birds are grayish-blue in color. In Colorado, great blue herons are typically seen near the edges of rivers, lakes, and wetlands. Although they like shallow water, herons build their massive nests using sticks high up in the trees.

Uncommon Animals of Colorado

It's pretty rare to see these types of wildlife in Colorado.
