Single-Use Plastic Bags to Become Banned Across Colorado
Denver recently implemented a ten-cent fee for using single-use plastic bags and now the Governor has signed a bill that will make that statewide.
It's House Bill 21-1162, and it's now official, though it won't go into effect until January 1, 2023. According to The Denver Post, Governor Polis signed the bill into law on Tuesday, July 6, 2021.
Have you already started to bring your own canvas bag to the grocery store? You may want to begin getting yourself used to idea unless you're willing to pay ten cents for each plastic bag they need to use to bag up your groceries.
Though the law does not go into effect until 2023, local communities, like Denver has done, can start banning single-use plastic bags now.
The money taken in from the bag fee will mostly go to the local governments, with some of it going to waste diversion and even to pay for the enforcement of the fee itself. That is a good question: How do they expect to enforce this?
Along with a few other exemptions, businesses with no more than three locations around Colorado are exempt from charging the fee.
I can see everyone using their own personal shopping bags to express themselves. I see where there are several Jason Bourne-themed bags for sale for about $20 that I might be interested in.
