Odd List Of ’50 U.S. Towns That Are Hard To Say’ Includes Only One From Colorado
There are hundreds of towns in Colorado, and there's one that has ended up on an odd list of 50. This list claims that most Americans would struggle to pronounce this small town in the Centennial State.
Maybe it's because we've lived in Colorado for a long time, but given a list of town names that seem very, very hard to pronounce, it's crazy that this Colorado town is among those ranks.
It's a list that is bound to get people "fired up" across the nation: 24/7WallStreet.com, a financial news and opinion company, recently dove into a list of 29,000 town names in America and used their "editorial discretion" to decided which 50 would be hardest to pronounce on the first try.'
That doesn't seem very scientific, but yet, maybe that's why we are talking about that list. It would appear they included one town from each of the 50 states.
Town Names on 24/7 Wall Street's list include:
- Quonochontaug, Rhode Island - KWAHN-ah-kahn-tawg.”
- Igiugig, Alaska -“Ig-ee-UH-gig.”
- Beaulieu, Minnesota - “bohl-yuu.”
- Keosauqua, Iowa - “KEE-o-SAW-qua.”
Those name do seem like they'd be hard to "nail" on first attempt, but their choice for Colorado seems crazy. Why would they think it's hard?
WHAT IS LISTED AS THE MOST DIFFICULT COLORADO TOWN NAME TO PRONOUNCE?
It's a small town, southeast of Denver in Elbert County, named after the Native American people that first owned the land.
KIOWA
24/7WallStreet.com thinks that Kiowa is Colorado's most-difficult-to-pronounce town name. That just seems silly, doesn't it? It's "Iowa" with a "K" at the beginning; it doesn't seem so hard.
POSSIBLE WRONG WAYS TO PRONOUNCE 'KIOWA'
- "KEE--oh-wah.
- "KY-oh-Ay."
- KY-oh-Way."
A FEW COLORADO TOWN NAMES THAT DEFINITELY SEEM HARDER TO SAY
- Ouray - 'Yur-ay."
- Towac - "Toy-ock."
- Uncompahgre - "Un-Com-Paw-Gray."
