Colorado Single-Use Plastic Bag Ban Starts January 1, 2024

Since the 10-cent bag fee has been enacted in Colorado, I might have purchased a few bags. It seems like any time I wanted to go to the grocery store on a spontaneous trip, I would always forget to have a bag in my truck.

If you are anything like me, we might want to make sure that we have plenty of reusable bags in our vehicles in Colorado on January 1, 2024, as single-use plastic bags will be banned in the state of Colorado at stores such as chain grocers and convenience stores.

The new Colorado state law comes from House Bill 21-1162, which the Colorado General Assembly enacted in 2021.

What Does the Colorado Plastic Bag Mean?

Stores in Colorado can still have bags, but there will only be a paper option. You will still have to pay 10 cents per paper bag too.

Some establishments are exempt from the bag ban in Colorado. Those stores include establishments that have three or fewer locations and small stores that operate only within the state of Colorado.

Polystyrene Food Containers Banned in Colorado

Another item that you will likely no longer see in the state of Colorado after January 1, 2024, is the use of polystyrene in ready-to-eat food containers. This ban is also part of Colorado House Bill 21-1162.

If you don't want to keep paying for paper bags at the grocery store, I suggest stocking up on reusable bags and having a stockpile in your vehicle. I know that I will have to keep two separate piles in my car. One or two of those bags are going to be emergency-use bags because I am terrible at putting the bags back in the car as soon as I unload the groceries.
