Yesterday afternoon, on February 5, westbound Prospect Rd at College Ave in Fort Collins was closed due to a large water main break that occurred around 4 PM. Not an ideal time to close a major Fort Collins road, especially considering the repairs took several hours to complete.

In addition to the road closure, many residents' water service was also temporarily shut off as the city crews made repairs to the line carrying fresh water to the surrounding neighborhoods. The repairs were estimated to take 6-8 hours to complete, but the Fort Collins Utilities Department didn't give the "all clear" until roughly 10 AM this morning, February 6.

Once the water connection was restored, the city was quick to point out that water in the area may appear cloudy and/or water pressure may fluctuate a bit.

When service is restored, you may experience cloudy or discolored water for a short time. This water is not harmful, though it may stain laundry. It’s also safe to use on plants and landscape.

If your water is cloudy, they recommend removing any aeration filters on faucets and running cold water for 15 minutes to flush the pipes and hopefully any of the cloudy water out of your system. They say if that doesn't work, wait 30 minutes and try again.

And if you're still having issues with cloudy water, contact the Ft Collins Utilities department at 970-221-6700.
