If you're in need of wood mulch, then May 1 is your lucky day.

The City of Fort Collins Forestry Division will be giving away free wood mulch to community members from 8 a.m. to 3 p.m. that Saturday at 1380 Hoffman Mill Road.

Dubbed Free Mulch Day, the event will allow visitors with a Fort Collins address to receive their mulch as long as they show up with an open-top vehicle or trailer. City personnel will provide assistance using a front-end loader.

According to a press release from the City of Fort Collins, the Forestry Division has been celebrating Free Mulch Day since 2009 in order to keep City-owned tree debris from tree maintenance operations out of local landfills.

The mulch is also used for capital improvement projects, parks, and on Poudre School District properties.

Commercial businesses are not eligible to participate in Free Mulch Day. Those that do attend are asked to abide by the following COVID-19 precautions:

  • Remain in your vehicle the entire time.
    • If you have to exit your vehicle, stay at least six feet away from others.
  • Community members and staff must wear face coverings.
  • Do not attend the event if you or anyone you have been in contact with is showing virus symptoms.

The City recommends bringing a cover or tarp to the event. If you are unable to attend, self-load sites are open during the summer at the Timberline Recycling Center and The Gardens on Spring Creek.
