How long will it take to part with that sweatshirt from college? Those shoes that are still holding strong, but aren't smelling too good? Do you have one of those rules? "If I haven't used it in ___ years, I'm probably not going to use it."

You should. Worst case scenario looks like this.

Okay, that's going a little far, but do you have any of these tendencies in you? Go into your closet and look. How long does it take you to part with your stuff?

We have the World's Largest Yard Sale coming up. That's where this idea comes from. We were in a meeting talking about who hangs on to what before you'll have a garage sale, take it to the donation spot, or just throw it out.

I have a strict 2 year policy. If I haven't touched something for OVER 2 years, it's gone. I don't care how handy it may come in, I dump it if it hasn't seen the light of day for over 2 years. There are some rare exceptions, but if I don't do that, I'll just be over run by STUFF. It becomes too much.

Half the problem is that often times quality clothing lasts longer than it is in style. Take Starter jackets for example, a subject we've discussed before. Here is a picture of my

Starter jacket that for all intents and purposes is in very good shape. Then I put it on and my wife doesn't want to be seen in public with me. Okay, she doesn't really care, but out of respect for what she has to look at, I don't wear it to any fancy shindigs or out to dinner. It has my favorite team logo and it's super warm, but it passed it's shelf /fashion life somewhere around the first time George W. was President.  What do I do with it? Garage sale with one item? If anything, it goes to charities that collect clothing.

The question is, if I dug into your closet, would what I find have it's place in a history lesson? Are these artifacts still being used, or are they just collecting time?
