Colorado Bans Late Rent Fees Through 2020
On Thursday (Oct.15), Gov. Jared Polis signed an executive order banning late fees for Colorado renters through the end of 2020.
The order was announced after Colorado's Special Eviction Prevention Task Force released a a 17-page report that included several recommendations regarding housing instability caused by the COVID-19 pandemic.
According to the Denver Channel, Gov. Polis built the task force to address the current housing crisis.
The group, which met twice in the late summer and fall, compiled a series of short and long term recommendations - some that were even adopted by Gov. Polis in the new executive order.
The Denver Post said that 7 of the 10 task force members recommended that Gov. Polis should put a state-specific eviction moratorium in place, one that goes beyond the nationwide eviction moratorium that the CDC put into place six weeks ago.
Although Polis did not reinstitute a statewide eviction moratorium in this executive order, his office has vowed that the moratorium will be coming in a separate order.
In an official news release, Gov. Polis said, "My top priority is protecting the health and safety of Coloradans, which includes secure housing. Implementing these thoughtful recommendations is another important step toward creating housing stability for more Coloradans during this pandemic."
