Summers are nice in Colorado, but for many people, the fall is the best season. Especially after this scorcher of a summer, some cooler temps will be quite welcome. In fact, the fall is even better than the summer for many activities. In summer, afternoon rainfall is a probability rather than a possibility, the heat can be brutal, and there are more people to deal with because kids aren't in school. For some things, autumn is where it's at.

Here are the best fall outdoor activities in Fort Collins.

Enjoying the paved trails

This is where the temperature difference is key. We have miles and miles of paved trails in Fort Collins and beyond. They are great for walking, running, biking, rollerblading or skateboarding. You can go from a river ecosystem to the prairie. The CSU Environmental Learning Center is an incredible stop along the way. Great stuff.

Standouts - Poudre Trail, Spring Creek Trail

Fly Fishing

Spring runoff brings high water levels and tons of fun from a raft, kayak, and in some sections, a tube. Summer heat makes swimming the preferred activity, but in the fall, the fishing is phenomenal. Whether it is way up the Canyon to the North Fork of the Poudre, or in town between Shields and College, the trout are there and they are hungry. Local shops can help with fly selection. It's up to you to master that casting technique.

Cemetery Stroll

This is an interesting way to learn about the 'colorful' characters' that came before us in Fort Collins. Grandview Cemetery is situated on the western edge of Old Town and is a breathtakingly beautiful spot. The tour is Sept. 15 and will leave you feeling more connected to Fort Collins.

Treatsylvania - the Farm at Lee Martinez Park

Lee Martinez is a gem of a park 365 days a year, but the kids really love it when Halloween time comes around. It's a petting zoo by day, and a family friendly trick or treat venue...also by day. Seriously, kids go crazy for this one!
