Colorado School Allowing Trained Staff To Carry Firearms
According to KOAA News, a Charter School in Douglas County Colorado will have trained, armed staff members at The Ascent Classic Academy.
The school has about 500 students grades K-12. The school said they reached out to parents about the possibility of armed staff and received overwhelming support.
A lot may have come because of the shooting at the STEM School last year, which is in the same county. This school year, which starts September 3, and will be the first year the school will have armed staff members. Each one of the armed school security officers also serve other capacities in the school. The school keeps the number of armed staff and their identities a secret for safety reasons.
There were quite a few guidelines for a staff member that wanted also be a security officer. The staff had to have a concealed carry permit, volunteer to participate, go through an assessment and complete Faculty/Administrator Safety Training and Emergency Response (FASTER) training.
