Two cases of Zika virus in Colorado have been confirmed, say officials with the Colorado Department of Public Health and Environment.

Denver7 reports both infected individuals contracted the virus in a Zika-affected country, and have both recovered.

The cases were reported last week, and more Zika cases are expected to be reported in Colorado throughout the year, says CDPHE.

The World Health Organization declared the Zika epidemic a global emergency in recent weeks after babies of affected mothers were born with serious birth defects, reports Denver7.

Zika virus is spread by animal or insect bites/stings, and could potentially be transmitted sexually, as well. And due to birth defects, some countries are advising women to avoid pregnancy until 2018.
