10 Things You Can Do to Prevent Breast Cancer [VIDEO]
There is no known, sure-fire way to prevent breast cancer.
Really, we can only put ourselves in the best position to avoid it.
Improving general health is the first step that everyone can take, and that everyone will benefit from.
If you are at high risk for breast cancer, there are more serious measures that you can take. Those more serious measures involve your doctors and care providers.
First, the top two things that you can do to prevent breast cancer is to CHECK!
- Perform regular self exams
- Stay current with your mammograms
According to the Centers for Disease Control, the following things can be done for general prevention of breast cancer.
- Keep a healthy weight.
- Exercise regularly (at least four hours a week).
- Get enough sleep.
- Don’t drink alcohol, or limit alcoholic drinks to no more than one per day.
- Avoid exposure to chemicals that can cause cancer (carcinogens).
- Try to reduce your exposure to radiation during medical tests like mammograms, X-rays, CT scans, and PET scans.
- If you are taking, or have been told to take, hormone replacement therapy or oral contraceptives (birth control pills), ask your doctor about the risks and find out if it is right for you.
- Breastfeed your babies, if possible.
If you follow the suggestions on this list above, it will make you a healthier person, and the reduces the risk of breast cancer.
